"The photographs of Greek artist Nick Kontostavlakis are deeply saturated, dreamlike and highly detailed. Although taken on Kontostavlakis’ worldwide travels, the artist says that his photographs are not meant to represent reality or specific locales. Instead, they depict his own subjective feelings about nature, its wildness and unpredictability, and the mystery and psychic emanations of places and peoples."
Nick Kontostavlakis was born in 1983 in Zakynthos, Greece.
His main studies were in engineering, but he also attended lectures at "Focus school of Art Photography" in Athens.
He has participated in many art exhibitions, both in Greece and abroad. One of them was the APhf 2010, where he received the title "Young Greek Photographer" by the Hellenic Center for Photography. Furthermore, in 2014, his work was exhibited in one of the most prestigious galleries in New York, Agora Gallery.
His photos ''Vesturhorn Iceland'' and ''Icelandic Horses'' were selected among the 10 best photos of ''Travel and Nature'’ and '’ Wildlife'’ categories respectively at Sony World Photography Awards 2016, the biggest competition in the world, with 230.103 entries from 186 countries.
He works with a digital single-lens reflex camera and tends to shoot with a wide-angle lens. This results to a dramatic and striking effect, reflecting a powerfully cinematic atmosphere in each picture. The careful compositions and the continuous search for precisely the right frame for each image means that further work in the studio does not interfere with the picture's essence. In each one, the artist tells a very specific story. The fact that his stories are non-narrative doesn't lessen the compelling and intriguing character of the works' visual style. Kontostavlakis says he wants his art to express his innermost feelings and stimulate other people - and certainly he achieves this last with enviable effortlessness.
Now he lives and works in Zakynthos, Greece.
